LSI Logic Now Sampling High Port Count SAS Expander ICS

- 28- and 36-port expanders provide large storage environments with scalability and fault-tolerant path redundancy for improved system reliability.

- Technology leadership enhances customer choice while delivering high-performance, scalability and flexibility.

MILPITAS, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic (NYSE:LSI) today announced that it is now providing major OEM customers with samples of the LSI 3Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 28-port and 36-port expander ICs. The new products, the LSISASx28 and LSISASx36, extend LSI Logic's industry-leading SAS product line of ICs, host bus adapters (HBAs), MegaRAID(R) cards and SAS ROMB solutions, and underscore its position as a technology innovator (http://www.lsilogic.com/sas ).

Key product features include phy-based zoning for network security applications and initiator functionality such as self-discovery and self-configuration. The products leverage an ARM processor for enclosure management and extended SAS functions. LSI Logic is actively scheduling product demonstrations at customer locations.

"This is the sixth generation of expander IC products that LSI Logic has brought to market. Our experience in development, validation and interoperability testing dramatically reduces customer risk and underscores LSI Logic's position as the recognized leader in supplying SAS component products," said Robin Wagner, director of product marketing for the LSI Storage Components Group. "The x28 and x36 SAS expander ICs provide enterprise customers with a drive connection choice at next generation speeds and proven interoperability."

The SASx28 and x36 expanders provide an alternative to today's expensive and complex offerings found in high availability and scalable server clustering environments and storage subsystems used in clusters, SAN and NAS environments.

Expander product technology

The LSISASx28 and LSISASx36 expander ICs offer a common programming model for internal and external SEP support for ease of development and seamless customer migration. In addition, the x28 and x36 products provide customers with risk mitigation as both are backward compatible with the LSISASx12 and LSISASx12A external SEP interface. Both high port count expanders support 1.5 and 3Gb/s SAS and Serial ATA (SATA) data transfer rates per port, providing a flexible, scalable, and high-performance solution. Extensive testing has proven the LSI Logic SAS expander ICs fully interoperable with the company's other SAS component products.

LSI Logic's new high port count expanders build on the industry's most complete SAS product portfolio, which includes 12-port expanders, 4- and 8-port PCI-X and PCI Express controller ICs, the LSISAS1078 PCI Express to SAS RAID-on-Chip solution, HBAs, MegaRAID adapter cards and RAID on Motherboard (ROMB) solutions.

SAS technology enables SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 to the next-generation Direct Attach Storage (DAS) enterprise server, storage systems, and high-performance workstation markets while retaining device-level backward compatibility. The SAS standard defines a device-level enterprise storage interface incorporating SCSI command sets, serial point-to-point interconnections, dual porting, increased addressability and the ability to scale to small form factors. Because the SAS physical layer is compatible with SATA, users will have the choice of populating their systems with SAS or SATA hard disk drives, or a combination of both.
